If Congress ultimately approves the budget figures passed by a House subcommittee last week, the Department of Education’s discretionary budget will have increased by more than 38 percent in the past two years.

NOTE: *Level as approved by House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education on Oct. 3. President Bush originally requested $44.5 billion for the Education Department this year. But last week the White House formally agreed to add $4 billion more, for a total of $48.5 billion, $700 million less than the subcommittee approved later in the week.
