The Education Department has once again postponed its announcement of the winners of more than $65 million in grants to operate its system of educational research and development centers.

According to James Bencivenga, director of information services for the department’s office for educational research and improvement, department officials now plan to announce the winners of the 11 grants at a press conference on Nov. 27.

Initially, the department intended to make the announcement on Nov. 15. Uncertainty over the fate of two proposed centers devoted to teaching, plus particularly close competitions for two other grants, caused department officials to reschedule the announcement for Nov. 22.

Mr. Bencivenga said the date of the press conference was moved back a second time because officials in the research office needed additional time to work out the final details of the grant agreements with the winners of the competition. He said the officials hoped to complete their negotiations with the winners by Nov. 22.--tm
