Ronald J. Tomalis, a counselor to Secretary of Education Rod Paige, left the Department of Education in mid-September and is now working in the private sector, said Susan Aspey, a department spokeswoman. Mr. Tomalis had previously served as the acting assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education.
