James P. Boyle, the president of Ombudsman Educational Services, died May 25 of cancer. He was 65.

James P. Boyle

Mr. Boyle’s privately held company, founded in 1975, focuses on providing alternative education programs for at-risk youths. Today, it operates more than 70 learning centers and charter schools in 11 states, serving some 5,000 students.

Ombudsman, based in Libertyville, Ill., serves primarily high school students, contracting with districts to educate young people having trouble in school.

As private, for-profit companies began getting into the education business in the 1990, Mr. Boyle helped found the Association of Private Practitioners and Providers, a network of private-practice teachers and others formerly known as the Association of Educators in Private Practice.
