September 1—Arts education: Applications are due for the Outstanding School or Program in Dance Arts Education Award, sponsored by the National Dance Education Organization. September 1—Mental health: Applications are due for nominations for the Administrator School- Based Mental Health Award, sponsored by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The award recognizes excellence among school- based mental health programs. The winner will receive a $250 stipend to use at the organization’s annual conference in Dallas. September 15—School improvement: Applications are due for grants from the National Education Association. K-12 public school teachers, education support professionals, and university staff may apply for Innovation grants and Learning and Leadership grants. Innovation grants fund programs that improve student achievement. Leadership and Learning grants fund professional development opportunities for teachers. STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS, CONTESTS, AND AWARDS

August 1—Writing: Applications are due for the 2004 Children’s Book Writing Contest from GiGi Books LLC, an audio books publisher. Students and teachers are eligible to submit original 400-word stories that help young children improve their reading skills, build character, and utilize critical thinking techniques. The grand prize winner will receive a $250 cash prize and have their story published both in print and as an audio book. September 28—Essay contest: Applications are due for the Immigrant Contributions to America essay contest from MetLife. The New York City-based insurance giant supports twenty-six scholarship awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 in U.S. savings bonds. Students in grades 6 through 12 who are interested in applying must submit essays addressing the contributions of immigrant Americans. Students will be judged in grades 6-8 and 9-12.
