Several thousand children and adults “met agriculture face-to-face” this month, said the Future Farmers of America organization, when they attended the organization’s Farm on the Lawn event at its headquarters outside the nation’s capital.
Cattle, hogs, sheep, poultry, crops, and farm machinery were all on display at the two-day exhibition, which was intended “to let children see where food comes from,” according to a spokesman for the national organization.
“Today, less than 4 percent of the American people are farmers, providing food and fiber for the rest of us,” said C. Coleman Harris, national executive secretary of the ffa “This means most children grow up having no contact with food production. They grow up thinking meat and milk come from a gocery shelf instead of a farm.”
Most of the live and equipment displays were furnished by farmers in Virginia.
