The Annual Financial Report of California K-12 Schools is available from the California State Controller’s Office.
More than half of California’s 982 school districts—552 of them—spent more during the 2004 fiscal year than they took in, concludes an audit released July 7 by state Controller Steve Westly. The number of districts engaging in deficit spending for more than one year increased from 248 in fiscal 2003 to 339 in fiscal 2004, according to the “Annual Financial Report of California K-12 Schools.”
