Gov. Bob Riley of Alabama has announced the formation of a commission to study ways the state can improve the quality of its teaching and reward high-performing teachers. The commission will be led by the 2003 Alabama and national teacher of the year, Betsy Rogers. Panel members will be named by the end of this month, and the group’s first meeting will be next month, said a spokeswoman for the state education department.
