The American Federation of Teachers last week issued its expected endorsement of Michael S. Dukakis, the Democratic Presidential contender.
“Michael Dukakis is a compassionate and thoughtful leader who has shown over and over again that he is committed to the needs of the American people,” said the union’s president, Albert Shanker.
He noted that the union’s executive council had voted unanimously to endorse Mr. Dukakis and that internal surveys had shown strong member support for him.
The A.F.T.'s political director, Rachelle Horowitz, said the union would mount one of its most aggressive political efforts ever in behalf of the Massachusetts governor.
