The National Association of Secondary School Principals and Virco Inc. have named Melissa Shindel from Patuxent Valley Middle School in Jessup, Md., the 2009 National Assistant Principal of the Year.
The award, sponsored by Virco Inc., includes $5,000 that Ms. Shindel can use for her own professional development or classroom purchases.
Ms. Shindel was recognized for reaching out to parents and the community, providing professional development and extended learning opportunities to teachers, and implementing and improving student programs.
