A number of proposed personnel changes at the Department of Education advanced last week.

Three of President Bush’s nominations for Education Department positions came before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee on March 8. The nominations of Michell C. Clark as the department’s assistant secretary for management and Craig T. Ramey, a scholar who studies the development of intelligence, as a member of the board of directors of the National Board for Education Sciences were both reported favorably out of the committee.

Mr. Clark now serves as deputy assistant secretary for management at the department.

Consideration of the nomination of Kent Talbert to be the department’s general counsel was postponed after Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., requested more time to submit written questions to Mr. Talbert, currently the acting general counsel, according to committee spokesman Ryan Taylor.

Meanwhile, on March 7, the White House announced that President Bush planned to designate William McCabe to be the department’s acting chief financial officer. Mr. McCabe had been serving as chief of staff to the CFO.
