Student Voices Absent From Quality Counts
To the Editor:
I write on behalf of the Mikva Challenge Education Council, a group of Chicago high school students who identify issues within Chicago's public schools and create policy recommendations to address them.
In your recent Quality Counts report (Jan. 10, 2013) about safety, discipline, and school climate, there were no student-written responses or articles to allow us to express our thoughts. This is a problem because if you're going to cover things that take place in schools, you need to have students talking about those issues to further prove the points expressed throughout the publication.
Student voice is important to improve our schools because we have firsthand experience in these areas and should be part of the solutions to these issues.
