Texas Proposing Tougher Standards to Assure Preparation for College
Texas students may be expected to meet more-rigorous standards in core subject areas under proposed college-readiness standards.
The 100-page document released last month details the academic content and tasks—in English/language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies—that will equip students to succeed in their first year of college. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board worked with the Texas Education Agency to develop the standards, as required under recent state legislation.
The board, which oversees colleges and universities in the state, will collect public comment on the document through Dec. 10 and expects to vote on a revised version at its January meeting. The standards will then be reviewed by the state board of education. The standards are on the Web at http://www.thecb.state.tx.us/collegereadiness/TCRS.cfm.
