Cheri Pierson Yecke, a former official in the Bush administration, has been named Florida’s new chancellor of K-12 education.

Ms. Yecke, 50, served as the acting commissioner of education in Minnesota for 15 months before the Democratic-controlled legislature there voted in May 2004 not to confirm her nomination, effectively ousting her from the post.

When she takes over in Florida in October, she will replace James Warford, who stepped down as Florida’s K-12 chancellor in July.

“Her strong stance on accountability and middle school reform closely align with Florida’s educational priorities,” state Education Commissioner John L. Winn said in an Aug. 29 statement announcing Ms. Yecke’s appointment.

A former education secretary in Virginia, Ms. Yecke was the director of teacher quality and public school choice for the U.S. Department of Education under President Bush.
