The parent of a student at a Texas high school was charged last week with shooting the school’s football coach.

Gary Joe Kinne, who was named head football coach at Canton High School in 2003, was shot April 6 with an AK-47 rifle on school grounds, according to the local police. Schools in Canton, a town of 3,000 located 60 miles east of Dallas, were locked down during a search.

The coach underwent surgery at a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition late last week.

Jeffrey Doyle Robertson, the father of a boy who had played on the varsity football team, was arrested several hours after the incident, police and school officials said. He was captured after he fled the school grounds in a truck filled with weapons.

Police Chief Michael Echols said on a local television news program that Mr. Robertson had indicated earlier that he wanted to kill several people, including the football coach.

Mr. Robertson had argued with the coach and other school personnel on several occasions, authorities said. News outlets reported that the parent had been barred from attending games and practices for the team.
