The wife of a fundamentalist Christian preacher in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, has begun serving a 30-day jail sentence for violating Iowa’s compulsory school-attendance law.

Sharon Taylor, 47, was followed by about 200 well-wishers on her way to the Henry County jail on March 24, a day after her husband, the Rev. Tot N. Taylor, 45, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, was released after serving his 30-day term.

The Taylors, who are not state-certified teachers, were convicted in February for teaching their two children in the Blue Bird Christian Academy they operate out of the church basement. (See Education Week, March 11, 1987.)

Ms. Taylor said she would continue to educate her children at the school, which has four students.
