The nationally known educator and researcher Susan H. Fuhrman was named last week the next president of Teachers College, Columbia University.
Currently the dean of the graduate school of education at the University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Fuhrman is expected to take the helm of one of the nation’s pre-eminent institutions for preparing teachers and school administrators Aug. 1. She will succeed Arthur E. Levine, who is stepping down after 12 years.
Considered an expert on issues of teacher excellence and accountability for school performance, Ms. Fuhrman earned her doctorate in political economy at Teachers College in the 1970s. She later served as a faculty member at the college.
Ms. Fuhrman is also one of the founders of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education. She chaired the five-university research collaborative, which is housed at Penn.
In her new post, the former social studies teacher said in a statement, she will “actively encourage a working relationship with the New York City school system.”
