Leaders of an alternative teacher-credentialing program have announced a new effort aimed at helping K-12 instructors and others secure certification in general science and biology.

The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence announced in April that it would begin accepting applications for candidates seeking to become classroom instructors in those subjects, as part of an initiative to be included in its already-established Passport to Teaching process. That program offers teacher credentials in elementary education, English, and mathematics, said officials of the ABCTE, based in Washington.

Candidates for the science credentials will need to complete a five-step process, which includes taking subject-matter and teaching-knowledge tests, said Andrew R. Campanella, a spokesman for the group. His organization hopes to serve both individuals considering changing careers and moving into teaching and teachers now working without proper certification.
