The American Federation of Teachers has announced the creation of a $1 million fund to encourage projects by its local affiliates to improve public schools.

In the past, AFT locals have partnered with their school districts on school improvement projects, including peer review and assistance in Toledo, Ohio, and the creation of charter schools in New York City. The fund seeks to encourage such partnerships.

The AFT will seek additional donations from philanthropies for the fund. Grants will be given for projects beginning next fall.
