Testing expert Daniel M. Koretz has been appointed a professor of education at Harvard University’s graduate school of education. Mr. Koretz, 52, who took the job this month, will commute to the 1,085-student graduate school from his home in Bethesda, Md.

Before joining the Harvard faculty, Mr. Koretz was a senior social scientist for the RAND Corp., a nonprofit research institute based in Santa Monica, Calif.

Burton Sonenstein has been appointed the chief financial officer of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a private philanthropy based in Baltimore that supports efforts to assist disadvantaged children and families throughout the nation. Mr. Sonenstein, 59, replaces Rama Ramanathan, who will retire next month.

Mr. Sonenstein is the founder and chief executive officer of United Insurance Management Co., a Chevy Chase, Md.-based company that provides liability insurance to K-12 schools and colleges and universities. He is giving up that position to work for the Casey Foundation.

Gary L. Allen has begun a three-year term as the president of the Ohio Education Association. This month, Mr. Allen, 58, succeeded Michael N. Billirakis, 55, who gave up the president’s position to serve a one-year term on the executive committee of the Washington-based National Education Association.

While serving as the president of the Ohio affiliate of the NEA, Mr. Allen is taking a leave of absence from his current job as a teacher at McKinley Elementary School in the 5,200-student Xenia school district.

Based in Columbus, the OEA has a membership of 126,500 educators who work in Ohio public schools, colleges, and universities.
