It’s one thing to talk about expanding learning time. It’s another thing to pay for it.
A second report released by the Center for American Progress on July 21 explores the costs involved in moving to an extended school schedule and suggests options educators can take to pay for it. According to the report, those costs can range from an extra $280 to $720 a year per student.
The report says that schools can tackle those costs by redirecting money from other programs, such as the federal Title I program for disadvantaged students, shifting resources from other initiatives, renegotiating teacher contracts, or tapping into community-based resources, among other means.
