Charter elementary schools are, on average, outperforming traditional public schools in reading and in mathematics, and charter middle schools are doing better in math, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Washington’s Center on Reinventing Public Education.
Economists Julian Betts and Emily Tang of the University of California, San Diego, reviewed 40 existing studies on charter school achievement and scientifically combined the results from each study. Their analysis also found that there is no substantial difference on average in math or reading achievement between traditional and charter high schools or in reading achievement at the middle school level.
