A struggling Texas school district that gained national attention in 2012 when it cut its sports programs to focus on academics was ordered to shut down next year amid continuing poor academic performance.

The Premont Independent district was informed last month by the Texas Education Agency that the district must close in July 2016.

In 2013, the 500-student district formed a partnership with Texas A&M University-Kingsville to improve academics. Interim Superintendent Eric Ramos said the district will request an informal review, so it can show the progress it has made this year.
