The chief of the Salt Lake City schools, who has weathered controversies in the past year that include an ongoing federal probe of alleged racial discrimination, is leaving his post.
Superintendent McKell Withers, who has held the job since 2003, will retire at the end of the school year.
The announcement came nearly two weeks after the U.S. Department of Education opened an investigation in response to accusations that minority students are subjected to harsher discipline and more police supervision in Salt Lake City schools.
