The National Association of Secondary School Principals named Oregon educator Cathy Carnahan as its national middle school principal of the year last week.

Ms. Carnahan started at Duniway Middle School in McMinnville, Ore., as a teacher in 1993 and moved up the ranks. Since she became principal, the school has seen improvements in test scores, an attendance rate of at least 95 percent, and a decrease in student-behavior referrals.

“Under Cathy’s leadership, every faculty meeting is focused on instructional best practices designed to enhance student learning,” said Maryalice Russell, the superintendent of the 6,500-student McMinnville district.

Ms. Carnahan will be honored during a MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year awards banquet on Oct. 1 in Washington and will receive a $3,500 grant to use in her school.
