NAACP Ratifies Call for Ban on New Charter Schools

The NAACP national board has ratified a proposal calling for a ban on new charter schools.

Members, citing concerns over discipline and segregation within charter schools, among other issues, had put forward the proposal this summer.

Charter school advocates, led by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the Black Alliance for Educational Options, had pressured the NAACP board to reject the proposed moratorium. African-American students make up a significant share of enrollment in the nation’s charter schools—and in some areas, they dominate.
