District of Columbia Mayor Adrian Fenty appeared today at the city’s H.D. Cooke Elementary School, kicking off the third academic year since he took over the school system and appointed Michelle Rhee as chancellor.
It seems the mayor, who was at a morning news conference with Ms. Rhee and Education Secretary Arne Duncan to talk about swine flu preparations, wasn’t too keen on answering prying reporters’ questions about where his twin sons are attending school this year. He had apparently promised that once the boys finished 3rd grade at their Montessori school, he’d enroll them in a public school.
Well, at least one of the boys was spotted this morning at Lafayette Elementary, a high-performing school that is not in the mayor’s neighborhood.
Bill Turque at the Washington Post has a lot more detailabout the sighting of the Fentys in D.C.'s upscale Chevy Chase neighborhood, where Lafayette is located. Turque writes that it’s not unusual for out-of-boundary families to apply to enroll at Lafayette through a lottery system, but that it’s been rare in recent years for any slots to be available.
