After 20 years leading the New Teacher Center—a nonprofit well known for its work mentoring incoming educators around the country—Ellen Moir has announced she will retire this summer.
Moir, who previously worked as the director of teacher education at the University of California at Santa Cruz and as a K-12 bilingual teacher, founded NTC in 1998. The group partners with districts to support new teachers in their first years on the job.
A recent independent study of a New Teacher Center induction program found that students whose teachers received that mentoring for two years outperformed their peers in both English/language arts and mathematics. The students received up to the equivalent of five months of additional learning.
Eight percent of all new teachers in the United States now work with NTC, according to the group.
“By preparing educators to provide our highest-need and most underserved students with the education they deserve, we stand on the cutting edge of educational change,” wrote Moir in a letter announcing her decision last week. “We have tremendous partners, have received numerous federal research grants, and have repeatedly proven that our model of teachers teaching teachers works. I could not be more proud.”
The board is currently looking for a new chief executive officer.
