A study released last month finds continued growth in the number and reach of nonprofit education management organizations, or EMOs.
Often organized to manage charter schools, nonprofit EMOs now number 137, operating in 26 states, according to the study by Western Michigan University’s Study Group on Education Management Organizations and the National Education Policy Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Researchers said the number of nonprofit EMOs increased by 2.2 percent from 2009 to 2010, while the number of EMO-operated schools increased by 10 percent. Student enrollment in those schools increased by 22.2 percent.
