The Michigan education agency has taken the Detroit school district off federal “high risk” status after five years of what the state considers “systemic improvements in its administrative and financial procedures.”
The 49,000-student district will no longer need the education department to approve its school improvement plans or bids for purchase or service agreements exceeding $25,000. What’s more, removal of the high-risk designation will allow the district to apply for federal and state grants and solicit donations from businesses.
