Friend of the blog Mark Miller, who blogs over at Special Needs Truth ‘08, is overwhelmed by what he sees as bad news on the special education and disability policy front. He’s begging for “good news” stories, so I pointed him to this short-but-sweet article in The New York Times about a program that trains babysitters on how to work with children who have developmental disorders.
Clearly the article touched a nerve with readers, based on the overwhelming positive response to the young babysitter profiled (most of whom believe she needs a raise!) It made me wonder if there are training services like this in other cities, perhaps run by disability advocacy groups? I sense this specialized babysitting could be a real service for some enterprising young people.
