Alabama Legislature, State Board Divided Over Teacher-Ethics Plan

The Alabama legislature is facing a showdown over teacher ethics in an election year.

Last month, a legislative committee called the Legislative Council rejected a plan by the state board of education to put a code of ethics in the state administrative code. The council called it vague and recommended the board cut out many of the provisions in the proposed code.

The school board reached a consensus last week to stand by its proposal and not make any changes the council recommended. That means the full legislature will have to decide early next year whether to back up the Legislative Council’s decision or support the ethics code proposed by the school board.

All 140 seats in the legislature are up for election next year.
