School Governance and Information: Does Choice Lead to Better-Informed Parents?

Parents of students enrolled in private schools in the city of Washington through a voucher program called the Washington Scholarship Fund are eight to 13 times better informed about their children’s schooling than parents with children enrolled in traditional public schools, concludes a study by a team of researchers from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City.

The report found that the less informed parents are about their children’s schools, the less likely they are to feel satisfied with their children’s education. Therefore, it concludes, most parents who were committed to researching and choosing schools for their children were more likely to feel pleased with the schools they selected.
