Gerry House

Gerry House was named the 1999 Superintendent of the Year last week by the Alexandria, Va.-based American Association of School Administrators. Ms. House, 51, has been the superintendent of the 112,000-student Memphis, Tenn., schools for six years. The award, co-sponsored by ServiceMaster Co., a commercial-cleaning company in Downers Grove, Ill., consists of a $10,000 scholarship to be presented to a high school student from Ms. House’s district or her alma mater, a gold medallion, and a $2,000 U.S. Savings Bond.

Edwin C. Dardin has been hired as a staff lawyer for the National School Boards Association. Mr. Dardin, who joins current staff lawyer Naomi Gittins, will be working on U.S. Supreme Court issues, school law topics, and other special projects. Mr. Dardin previously worked for the Washington law firm of Levi, Perry, Simmons, and Loots.

Larry Vaughn

president of education consulting. Mr. Vaughn served as the superintendent of the Wichita, Kan., public schools, and Ms. Fassino was the assistant superintendent for planning, assessment, and staff development for the same 51,300-student district. Mr. Vaughn will lead the company’s efforts to introduce its computer software and teaching materials to elementary schools. Ms. Fassino will manage the company’s nationwide consulting group, which provides on-site help for teachers and families.

Susan Bayley has joined the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as the director of member programs and services. Ms. Bayley is the former chief executive officer of the Alexandria, Va.-based Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Inc. Before that, she helped create the first intercultural program at Georgetown University. The Reston, Va.-based math council strives to improve mathematical education in grades K-12.
