The Oakland, Calif., school district will reassign 13 counselors and possibly lay off another 12 in order to pay for a new teachers’ contract, the district superintendent says.

The district plans to make administrative cuts of approximately $2.3 million to pay for the contract, but still needs an additional $1.3 million, said Carolyn Getridge, the superintendent of the 52,000-student district. The district has a budget of about $330 million.

Ms. Getridge said the school board was required to notify the counselors by May 15, but is still examining alternatives to layoffs.

The teachers’ contract was approved after a 23-day strike. It will give teachers a raise of about 22 percent over four years. (See Education Week, March 27, 1996.)
