Multicultural Education

Global Voices: Culture and Identity in the Teaching of English, ed. by Joseph O. Milner and Carol A. Pope (National Council of Teachers of English, 1111 Kenyon Rd., Urbana, Ill. 61801; 229 pp., $22.95 paper). A collection of essays, anecdotes, and ideas about the teaching of English that grew out of the 1990 International Federation for the Teaching of English conference in Auckland, New Zealand.

Along Freedom Road: Hyde County, N.C., and the Fate of Black Schools in the South, by David S. Cecelski (The University of North Carolina Press, P.O. Box 2288, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27515-2288; 235 pp., $14.95, paper). The author depicts one county’s historic struggle for civil rights within the context of the dismantling of black education in the South.

The Need for Story: Cultural Diversity in Classroom and Community, ed. by Anne Haas Dyson and Celia Genishi (National Council of Teachers of English, 1111 Kenyon Rd., Urbana, Ill. 61801; 259 pp., $19.95 paper). Through essays and stories, the contributors explore the nature of storytelling, focusing on the complex relationships among stories, gender, and ethnicity.

A new perspective on the relationship between reading education and special education and how this unified dynamic might play out in the classroom.
