The federal Centers for Disease Control has awarded 42 grants--totaling $7 million--for programs to help teach young people about acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

The grants are part of “cooperative agreements” forged between the federal health agency and 15 national organizations, 15 state education departments, and 12 city school systems.

Under the five-year agreements, the recipients will work with the agency and other educational organizations in developing aids instruction for young people from junior-high-school to college age.

The projects range from an effort by the Council of Chief State School Officers to conduct a nationwide survey on the status of aids education to the development of a policymakers’ guide on teaching about the disease by the National Association of State Boards of Education.

Jack Jones, public-health adviser to the cdc’s office of school health and special projects, said 70 applicants competed for the grants. He said the agency planned to announce a second round of grant awards early next year.
