Chief Justice Warren E . Burger of the U. S. Supreme Court is setting up a scholarship at his alma mater, Johnson Senior High School in St. Paul, to honor his former English teacher, Edna Moore.
Justice Burger, a 1925 graduate of the “Pride of the East,” as Principal Fred W. Brett calls the school, has credited Ms. Moore with starting the first high-school journalism course in the city.
Justice Burger served as editor and sports editor of the school newspaper when Ms. Moore was its adviser.
The Chief Justice has said he will donate $5,000 to establish the scholarship, to be administered by the St. Paul Foundation.
The school will choose an annual recipient for the cash prize, which could be as much as $500, according to Mr. Brett.
The student chosen, to be an outstanding scholar with a special interest in journalism and writing, may use the money in whatever way he or she chooses, said Mr. Brett.
Ms. Moore’s family has also expressed interest in contributing to the trust fund.
