“Youth Suicide Prevention: Strengthening State Policies and School-Based Strategies,” is available from the National Governors Association.

Schools should play a larger role in preventing youth suicide, a new research brief advises.

The 12-page paper—produced by the Washington-based National Governors Association—says that many schools, however, do not have the resources to address youth suicide, and that most teachers and administrators do not have the skills necessary to recognize its warning signs. At least 12 states, the paper notes, have suicide-prevention programs that specifically address the needs of children and teenagers. It provides brief descriptions of those efforts.
