Asbestos
Ongoing investigation of district’s asbestos-management program was sparked by discovery of the substance last June in an area of a school certified as asbestos-free. Many false or inaccurate inspection reports have been discovered. Allegations of fraud and conflict of interest are being checked.

District 12
Report issued in April describes the Bronx community school district as a patronage mill in which jobs have been sold for cash or awarded for political favors. Chancellor subsequently suspended the entire school board. Two board members named in the report ran for re-election in May, were accused of filing false documents as part of separate, ongoing investigation of election fraud.

Custodians
Investigation of fraud and misconduct by school custodians. Five were arrested on various charges; nearly twice that many dismissed. November 1992 report recommended making custodians more accountable for how they spend their money and time, and subjecting them to more thorough background checks.

Teacher Conduct
Report issued last week claims a Bronx high school teacher has promoted child sexual abuse as a member of the North American Man-Boy Love Association. Although the man has not been charged with any crimes, the special commissioner has called for his removal from the classroom.
