John R. Silber, who as president of Boston University has presided over b.u.'s takeover of the management of the beleaguered Chelsea school system, announced his candidacy for Governor of Massachusetts last week.
In his announcement, Mr. Silber pledged a commitment “to the reform of primary and secondary education.” He added that he was heartened by the “enthusiasm with which the citizens, pupils, and teachers of Chelsea have joined together to work for the transformation of schools.’'
Last spring, city officials of the working-class Boston suburb agreed to allow bu to manage their school system. The university began its management duties in the fall.
Mr. Silber also vowed not to raise taxes until “all waste has been removed from government.”
Mr. Silber plans to campaign as a Democrat. To be listed on the ballot in the Sept. 18 primary, he must receive at least 15 percent of the delegates at the June Democratic convention.--mn
