The Senate has approved a measure that would keep a Colorado school district from losing $1.2 million in federal impact aid.

Sixty percent of the 5,500 students enrolled in the Fountain-Fort Carson district are the children of military members based at Fort Carson, Colo. The Department of Education penalized the district 10 percent of its federal impact aid because the district failed to submit its application by Jan. 31 in electronic form. The district’s paper application was submitted by the deadline.

Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., introduced the amendment, which was approved by unanimous consent, to a Department of Defense appropriations bill on Sept. 30. The Senate was scheduled to vote on the appropriations bill Oct. 6, after which it would head to a conference committee to resolve differences between the House and Senate versions.
