Schools in the 21st century should be constructed with more diverse learning environments and should be more integrated with their communities, a report on school design says.
The report—produced by the Washington-based American Architectural Foundation and the Cincinnati-based KnowledgeWorks Foundation—recommends designing schools to support a variety of learning styles, fostering a “small school” culture, and engaging the public in the planning process, among other suggestions. The recommendations come from an October 2005 meeting of more than 200 educators, architects, civic leaders, nonprofit leaders, and local government officials.
