20 years ago ... MAY 25, 1983

  • After a 2½-year investigation of university “diploma mills,” the Federal Bureau of Investigation is turning over to state education agencies the names of thousands of educators nationwide who allegedly bought phony degrees.
  • The number of alternative public secondary schools has grown dramatically since 1975, to a total of about 2,500 nationwide, according to “The Current Status of Schools of Choice in Public Secondary Education,” a new report issued by the National Institute of Education.

10 years ago ... May 26, 1993

  • Both conservatives and liberals are claiming victory in elections for seats on New York City’s 32 community school boards. The elections generated national attention when the Christian Coalition and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York joined forces to distribute voter guides highlighting candidates’ views on controversial social topics and parental rights.
  • The local union representing teachers in Douglas County, Colo., approves an unusual labor contract that will replace teacher’s longevity salary increases with pay for performance.
