American Indian and Alaska Native students tend to score lower than their white and Asian-American peers on National Assessment of Educational Progress reading and math tests in 4th and 8th grades, but they score higher than African-American students on those tests.

“The Performance of American Indian and Alaska Native Fourth-and Eighth-Grade Students on NAEP 2005 Reading and Mathematics Assessments” is posted by the National Center for Education Statistics.

The U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics’ report examines the NAEP reading and math scores of American Indian and Alaska Native students from the 2005 NAEP. The report examined national NAEP results for students attending both public and private schools, as well as those operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Department of Defense schools. It also examined regional scores for states with relatively high numbers of American Indian and Alaska Native students.

In addition, the report found that American Indian/Alaska Native students in Oklahoma had a higher average score than American Indian/Alaska Native students nationally or in other selected states, including Alaska, Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
