Philanthropic Leader Dies

By Ann Bradley — November 09, 2005 1 min read

Alan Pifer, a former president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, died Oct. 31. He was 84.

From 1967 to 1982, Mr. Pifer led the New York City-based philanthropy endowed by Andrew Carnegie as it focused on social justice and strengthening the rights of the disadvantaged.

Under Mr. Pifer’s leadership, according to the foundation, the Carnegie Corporation supported early-childhood education, educational children’s television, and the College-Level Entrance Examination program, a national program that grants college credit through tests. Carnegie funding also helped support the creation of Education Week in 1981.
