Phila. District Asks Edison to Manage More Schools

The Philadelphia school district has asked Edison Schools Inc. to manage two more campuses.

Edison, a for-profit education management company based in New York City, has been managing 20 schools as part of Philadelphia’s experiment in using outside providers to run dozens of its most troubled schools.

The approach has been controversial. But last year, when district test scores rose significantly, Edison schools saw some of the stronger gains. Last week, the district asked Edison to take on two additional elementary schools.

Separately, the 205,000-student district decided to take back the management of two of the six schools that Temple University has been managing. District spokesman Joe Lyons said the move did not reflect on Temple’s work. The schools, he said, needed more intensive intervention.
