New American Schools, an Arlington, Va.-based national coalition that provides comprehensive school improvement models to districts, has named Donald M. Feuerstein its president. He succeeds John Anderson, who will become the organization’s vice chairman this month. Mr. Feuerstein, 62, is currently a senior adviser at the U.S. Department of Education, where he works on issues of student financial aid, technology access, and school construction. Previously, he was the executive vice president and chief legal officer for the investment firm Salomon Inc., in New York, for 20 years.


Connie Blaney

The National School Public Relations Association, based in Rockville, Md., has tapped Connie Blaney as the president of the 1,700-member organization. Ms. Blaney, the director of public relations for the Norman, Okla., school system, will serve a one-year term. The NSPRA provides communication training to school leaders throughout the United States and Canada.


Jay Cummings

Jay Cummings, a former assistant to the Texas commissioner of education and a senior manager in the Texas Education Agency for the past 14 years, will become an associate professor in the department of teacher education and education administration at the University of North Texas in Denton. The appointment takes effect Jan. 1. Mr. Cummings, 57, will teach graduate courses and strengthen partnerships with Texas districts pursuing education reforms.


John B. Childers

John B. Childers began work this month as the new president and chief executive officer of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Mr. Childers, 58, served as the vice president for communications and government relations for the College Board.

He was the deputy assistant secretary for higher education with the U.S. Department of Education from 1989 to 1993.
