Roland Tharp and Ronald Gallimore, two professors in the University of California system, have won the 1993 Grawemeyer Award in Education.
The two won for their 1988 book Rousing Minds to Life: Teaching, Learning, and School in Social Context. The book argues for a comprehensive approach to redesigning education to fit students’ needs.
The book focuses, in part, on a study of the Kamehameha Early Education Project in Hawaii.
Mr. Tharp is a professor of education and psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Mr. Gallimore is a professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science at the University of California at Los Angeles.
The Grawemeyer Awards, named for the philanthropist H. Charles Grawemeyer, are given annually in religion, education, political science, and music composition. Each award carries a prize of $150,000.
