Marion Bolden has become the new state-appointed superintendent of the Newark, N.J., public schools. Ms. Bolden has been with the 44,000-student district for 31 years, most recently as the associate superintendent for teaching and learning. She replaces Beverly Hall, who left the state-run district to head the 58,000-student Atlanta public schools.
Emma Walton has begun a one-year term as the president of the 53,000-member National Science Teachers Association, based in Arlington, Va.. Ms. Walton, a science education consultant and the communications director for the Alaska Science Teachers Association, is a former program director for the National Science Foundation.
Cleo P. Mathews has been elected to her second nonconsecutive one-year term as the president of the West Virginia state school board. Ms. Mathews, 68, began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in 1957, and most recently taught at the college level before retiring. She has been a member of the board for six years.

BeckyMontgomery has started her one-year post as the chairwoman of the Council of the Great City Schools, a Washington-based group representing 51 large city districts. Ms. Montgomery, 45, is a planning specialist for the Ramsey County, Minn., community human-services department and has been a St. Paul school board member since 1990.

John Harrison has been tapped to head the 20,000-member North Carolina Middle School Association, an affiliate of the National Middle School Association. A former teacher and administrator, Mr. Harrison, 39, heads an education consulting firm. He replaces Linwood Johnson.
